The highest possible safety

The Shackleton Alpine Skills Challenge offers the unique opportunity to undergo expert mountain training in the French Alps with everything taken care of - luxury accommodation, kit, transport and all logistics - culminating at the summit of 'the highest mountain entirely in Italy.

Led by our team of IFMGA mountain guides, we’ll absorb and practise every necessary aspect of alpinism in preparation for a summit attempt of Gran Paradiso, one of the coveted 4,000m peaks of the Graian Alps.

We’ll spend the preceding days learning all the key alpine mountaineering techniques on stunning Via Ferrata routes and using crampons and ice axes to navigate across glaciers. Skills acquired, we’ll transit to Italy for our two-day mountain ascent, hiking three hours to overnight at a spectacular mountain hut on the way. We’ll rise as a team before dawn to summit the spectacular 4,000m peak, marvelling at both the panoramic views and our own expanded horizons.

Invigorating Experiences, Personal Development

From dramatic, snow-capped granite ridges to ancient glaciers of blue ice, the Alps wheedle their way under the skin. It’s the ideal environment to learn the techniques - - belaying, rappelling, assessing situations - that have carried thousands of adventurers to its many peaks and thence to further-flung ranges. We’ll cross France's largest glacier and ice-climb its pitches; depend on skills learned only yesterday to help us safe today. We’ll stand atop a mountain as tall as a 4k run. We’ll come down changed.

Stimulating environments

Nestled beneath the towering Mont Blanc, the Chamonix valley is one of Europe’s best adventure playgrounds and the birthplace of Alpinism. The rugged terrain continues to draw enthusiasts and experts from around the world. Its soaring peaks, challenging terrain and sophisticated infrastructure make it the ideal place to learn at an intensive pace.

Learn from record-breaking guides

Our expert guides will be on hand both before and during the Challenge to provide specialised mental and physical training – along with nutritional guidance - to allow us to push beyond our own boundaries. They will ensure everyone accesses the skills required to thrive in the environment and play a full part in the expedition team.
