THE CENTENARY

COMING SOON

In the name of camaraderie we also want to alert Shackleton followers to the other individuals and institutions that are making sure his name is not forgotten. For everything from film seasons to new science research projects, from photography to expeditions, have a look below to see how you can help mark his achievements.

Our whole ethos is inspired by Shackleton’s life. To mark the centenary of his death we will be making an announcement that celebrates his legacy and ensures that it continues in the most positive way possible for future generations. Follow our countdown on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. We will reveal our plans on January 5 and look forward to your participation in this tremendously exciting project.

On 5 January, 2022, it will be one hundred years since Ernest Shackleton died. He drew his last breath just five short years after his courageous leadership and defiance of the odds in the Endurance expedition seized the imagination of the world. At the time he would inspire everyone from Churchill to TS Eliot. A hundred years later Shackleton continues to stir up profound emotions about what it means to push the boundaries of knowledge and stand strong in conditions of extreme adversity.

To The Ends of the Earth: Exploration and Endurance
on Film

The Royal Geographic Society will be bringing back its extraordinary exhibition on the photographic legacy of the Endurance Expedition, looking not just at Shackleton as an explore but as a communicator whose story would enthral generations. Frank Hurley’s fragile glass plate and celluloid negatives, stored securely at the Royal Geographical Society for more than 80 years, have been digitised so that they can be seen at the remarkable level of detail he captured during that epic journey. Full details here.

On 17 September of this year, a team of ten Scouts and leaders recreated Shackleton’s final departure from London by sailing a flotilla of half a dozen vessels led by the Lady Daphne barge exactly one hundred years after The Boss did. Two Scouts were in that original Shackleton-Rowett expedition, James Marr and Norman Mooney. On December 31, 2021, the same team that sailed down the Thames will depart from South America for Antarctica on a 23-day voyage to conduct a series of research projects connected to climate change. Full details here.

SHACKLETON'S FINAL QUEST VOYAGE

Shackleton’s fateful final expedition on The Quest is being marked by an extraordinary voyage organised by Ice Tracks in conjunction with the James Caird Society. There are still a few berths on the MS Seaventure, which will host a wide range of events to celebrate Shackleton’s life and legacy as it tours the Antarctic. Ship operator Polar Latitudes will take voyagers to Port Lockroy and King Haakon Bay as well as setting up a special day in Gritvyken. Full details here.

ANTARCTIC QUEST 2021

Quest 21 will travel into the untrodden regions of the Antarctic Peninsula to undertake essential science and exploration. The team of serving and ex-military men and women will manually haul all their supplies and scientific equipment. They will hold a commemoration service in his honour on the ice on 5th January 2022. This will take place on the East Coast of the Peninsula, overlooking the Weddell Sea, and the site of Shackleton’s legendary Endurance Expedition. The research will specialise in looking at the microplastic, metal and nutrient content of snow. They will use the experience as a basis for raising environmental awareness in workshops in schools. Full details here.

SHACKLETON: JOURNEY FROM ANTARTICA TO SOUTH GEORGIA

Quark Expeditions is offering a completely new 20-day itinerary to celebrate Shackleton’s life. Guests will travel on the Ultramarine, a technologically advanced ship that comes with two twin-engine helicopters and 20 Zodiacs. Polar experts Tim Jarvis (author of Chasing Shackleton) and Dr Ross MacPhee (curator of The Endurance: Shackleton’s Legendary Antarctic Expedition) will give special presentations on the trip. The ship will cross Drake Passage, visit the Weddell Sea, go to Elephant Island and eventually – if conditions allow - let guests pay tribute to Shackleton at his grave in Grytviken, South Georgia. Full details here.

As his windswept gravestone in South Georgia testifies, 5th January 1922 was the day when Ernest Shackleton ‘entered life eternal.’ One hundred years later, with the Boss known, loved and admired throughout the world, hundreds of thousands will mark this moment and celebrate his extraordinary life at his gravestone and around the world.

Our own homage will include a Centenary collection, heritage partnership and a unique and enduring commemoration that we are excited to announce in October.

Watch out for a wide range of ways to participate. Sign up for more details.

WOMEN'S COLLECTION: FIND OUT MORE:

The Shackleton product team is working closely with polar explorer Wendy Searle - only the seventh woman in history to complete a 45-day solo, unsupported journey from Hercules Inlet to the geographic South Pole. Wendy is Shackleton Challenge’s Expeditions Manager and is leading the development of our forthcoming womens’ range testing program.

Sign up today to come on the journey with our womens’ expedition range.

THIS IS SERIOUS KIT FOR RECORD-BREAKING WOMEN. DEFINITELY NOT 'PINK AND SHRINK'

It has always been Shackleton’s intention to extend our reputation in performance and quality into women’s apparel. We are excited to confirm that we are now working on an all-new outerwear range for women, launching in 2022.

Female physiology performs and adapts differently in cold weather. Our mission is to design, develop, test and launch a from-scratch, female-specific expedition range that offers women the unique protection and range of comfort their bodies need in the world’s worst conditions.

Modern recycled fabric technology has moved on significantly in recent years. We can now offer high performance protection with a wide range of breathable comfort in a structured and elegant form.

Shackleton’s rainwear range will start dropping mid 2022. Sign up here to stay in to touch with the waterproof program.

A RANGE OF PERFORMANCE WATERPROOFS THAT YOU REALLY WANT TO WEAR, NOT JUST NEED

TO WEAR.

Protection against rain and wind is for many of us more important than thermal insulation for most of the year. The last two British winters have been wet and stormy but not especially cold, which typically leaves us with a reluctant choice. It’s either a thin nylon rain shell that’s dry and breathable (but looks and feels like childrenswear), or it’s a grown-up jacket that’s heavy and hot.

EXPEDITIONS: FIND OUT MORE:

Another world-first. Shackleton co-founder Ian Holdcroft will join an international crew of world-class oarsmen in their attempt to break six world records. The Shackleton Mission will involve an 800 mile row across the treacherous Southern Ocean in the wake of Shackleton’s James Caird from Antarctica to South Georgia. The team hopes to arrive around 5th January 2022, exactly 100 years after the death of Ernest Shackleton on that same remote island in the Southern Ocean.

THE SHACKLETON MISSION

A world-first attempt: injured army veteran Martin Hewitt will aim to become the first disabled explorer in history to trek 700 miles from the Antarctic coast to the South Pole. He will follow that with an ascent of Mount Vinson in his attempt to complete the world’s first Adaptive Explorer’s Grand Slam. Shackleton is proud to support and equip Martin’s unique challenge.

adaptive antarctica

The Shackleton team is currently deep in the planning phase of two exciting polar expeditions this winter (or summer, if you’re in Antarctica).
