The time-honoured methods still used by our partners are also often the only way to achieve the luxury feel we seek. That’s true of the Dulwich sweater, our evolution of the classic mid-weight crew.

Sir Ernest spent his secondary years at London’s Dulwich College before leaving to join the Merchant Navy at sixteen. In his honour, the original James Caird lifeboat is now sited there, mast and sails restored. It’s a daily inspiration to modern students, epitomising as it does his timeless values of courage and true leadership.

For centuries, explorers have chosen wool for its legendary performance: it’s warm, breathable, non-allergenic and naturally biodegradable. The Dulwich is inspired by sweaters worn by EHS & crew on expedition, especially the moss-stitch on the chest, back and upper arms. This gives both extra warmth and a satisfyingly rugged character. Its exceptional comfort comes from the 18.5-micron fibre, from the first shearing of Scottish lambs, much finer than most lambs' wool and close to cashmere in feel. The 12-gauge seamless knit construction takes this further by eliminating friction, while also aiding durability.
