THE LAST ICE

Sea bike EXPEDITION

[GREENLAND]

PEPE IVARS and albert bosch

EXPLORING THE SOUTHWEST COAST OF GREENLAND BY SEA BIKE.

An extraordinary adventure and awareness project that harnesses the spirit of polar exploration to document the impacts of climate change, pollution, and polar ice retreat.

In this upcoming expedition, a team of four seasoned adventurers will journey along the southwest coast of Greenland in complete autonomy, relying on specially-designed water bikes built to endure extreme conditions and carry all essential supplies.

This marks the first-ever sea bike crossing along the rugged southwest Greenland coastline. The journey will start in the small town of Quaqortoq, heading south to Aappilattoq—a remote village at the island’s southern tip.

This north-south expedition will cover roughly 250 kilometers through icebergs, fjords, and open-sea ice floes, navigating Greenland's untouched coast on an innovative, fully sustainable mode of transport. Notably, it will be the world’s first polar expedition conducted with this unique type of transport.

There may be some confusion with a similar activity carried out recently, which was not an expedition, but a tourism activity with water bikes in a polar area, making sporadic departures from a boat when conditions were optimal.

Because of the complexity and risk of our adventure, and out of respect for our passion and the commitment of all the adventurers present and historical, we are obliged to qualify the difference between a real adventure, and a tourism activity in controlled conditions, however well filmed or photographed.

THE EXPEDITION

THE ROUTE

A passage that was once impossible is now increasingly navigable, as Arctic summer sea ice has rapidly declined with climate change. Our journey will bear witness to the extreme and catastrophic changes being wrought on this critical region.

THE SEA BIKE

The team used Sea Bikes produced by Schiller Bikes with stainless steel and anodised components throughout. The specially optimised propeller design achieves ultra low drag. Headquartered in Mill Valley, California, Schiller Bikes focus on unlocking trailblazing voyages on aquatic terrain.

THE KIT

The crew will be kitted out with a range of Shackleton performance apparel for the expedition. This includes the Markham Shell Jacket for wind and waterproof protection, the Hercules Down Jacket for warmth and Lister Merino Long Sleeves.
