CRAFTING OUR BRITISH HERITAGE KNITS

Since the sweaters worn by Sir Ernest and crew were British-made, in crafting today’s heritage knits we keep as close as possible to the same tradition. The only way to achieve the luxury feel we seek is through time-honoured methods – a choice that also ensures impeccable reliability.

Wool has been the explorer's choice for centuries. It's natural, warm even when wet, biodegradable, non-allergenic, breathable and quick-drying. And while much of our technical expedition gear would have been unrecognisable to Sir Ernest & crew, the same does not apply to traditional knitwear. The chunky, ribbed sweaters photographed on convivial evenings on the Endurance work just as well for today’s adventurers. They also proved perfect for long days staying active on the ice, keeping up morale as their vessel’s frozen plight began to look inevitable.

Our British-made chunky knits are modelled on those worn by EHS & crew, and suit everyone we’ve seen in one. Today they’re made in the Isle of Man on traditional looms, and hand-finished by local craftspeople.

The Hero roll-neck is modelled on those worn by the Boss on the 1914 Endurance expedition and the heroic rescue exploits that followed. It’s a faithful reproduction apart from one critical detail; softness against the skin.

The Nimrod funnel-neck is inspired by the sweater worn by Sir Ernest on his earlier 1907 Nimrod Expedition, when he set out to be the first man to reach the South Pole. The mix of recycled cashmere and lambs’ wool delivers the perfect blend of sturdy and cossetting, which, now we write it down, also sounds like the wish-list for the perfect wearer.

Technical performance in both is still remarkable, with the structural integrity to last a lifetime of washes. Thanks to wool’s remarkable resistance to retaining dirt and odour, for most of us, that’s a once-a year treat: an annual ritual before sun-drying and packing them away for the summer.

On both, the front hem carries the nine-pointed star carved on Shackleton's gravestone, with his motto - ‘By Endurance we Conquer’ on the inside edge.

Reassuringly weighty and sturdy-feeling, they evoke a sense of occasion each time you pull one on – and when you see the effort that goes into crafting one, even more so. Each piece is lovingly assembled by hand using the traditional point-to-point method of linked seam construction. This time-consuming, highly skilled process takes several years to perfect.

"It is in our nature to explore, to reach out into the unknown"
