Shackleton x FT Leadership Challenge

The Shackleton x FT Leadership Challenge explores the proposition that, with the right mindset and adequate preparation, almost anyone can summon their inner leader when called upon. Through the lens of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s philosophy, the Challenge reframes leadership not as heroism, but as judgement, adaptability and care for others under pressure.

With first dates launching in April 2027, The Shackleton x FT Leadership Challenge will build resilience in Finse, Norway where Amundsen, Scott and Shackleton all trained a century ago. The five-day courses will include full polar expedition training on the Hardangervidda glacier, including cross-country skiing and camping out in sub-zero temperatures, combined with a carefully developed series of inspiring lectures, workshops and coaching sessions from a FT-picked team of experts in the legendary Finse1222 hotel.

Shackleton x FT Leadership Challenge

Jon Slade, the FT’s new CEO is behind the initiative. “Significant uncertainty has become part of global and domestic business in today’s world. Sir Ernest Shackleton understood that unforeseen events and extreme environments do more than just test leaders, they shape and make them. His outstanding leadership of the ‘Endurance’ expedition to Antarctica in 1914-17 has made his name a by-word for courage, determination and ingenuity; - traits we would all do well to cultivate’ said Slade.

LEADERSHIP THROUGH ADVERSITY

Shackleton x FT Leadership Challenge

DEVELOP AN EXPLORER MINDSET

Shackleton Co-founder Ian Holdcroft said, ‘The Boss (Shackleton) showed us that effective leadership is built on personal resilience - an ability to dig deep and make good decisions even in the most difficult of times. This will be a unique opportunity to develop an explorer mindset in an epic and challenging environment. Whatever happens, it will be unforgettable.’

Shackleton x FT Leadership Challenge

The expedition component of the Challenge will be led by Louis Rudd MBE (the first Briton to cross Antarctica, solo, unsupported and unassisted).

The course does not require any prior experience of exploration or snowsports, but a minimum level of physical fitness is essential.

AUTHENTIC EXPEDITIONS

Every Shackleton Challenge has a central mission designed to develop the physical, mental and emotional strength required to access our untapped performance potential. While all challenges will stretch us to a degree, none will defeat us. We come through as a team.

SHACKLETON SPIRIT

Shackleton Challenges embody the enlightened leadership so central to the Boss’s own ethos, with empathy and encouragement at the centre. Our committed guides come with invaluable experience in tackling multi-day expeditions and a deep well of environmental wisdom and lively anecdotes. The contrast between daytime achievement and team-wide conviviality in the evenings is a distinctive feature of Shackleton Challenges that marks us out as different in kind.

LIFELONG RETURNS

The trials overcome will evolve into resources that you’ll draw on for the rest of your life, applicable to all kinds of situations where you’ll need to take the lead.

Memories made will abide. Like most of our Challenges alumni, you’ll probably stay in touch with the rest of the team.

While this Level One Challenge can adapt to a wide range of fitness levels, the Boss came here for a reason: it can easily catch out the unprepared. Our Foundations programme details exactly how we recommend all team members make ready to play their part in helping everyone come through smiling.

"It was probably the best experience of my life so far."

"Inarguable proof that my physical and mental strength is far more than I ever gave myself credit for."

"It had only been a short expedition but I was already planning my next – it turns out there’s no turning back once you’ve had a taste of real adventure."

"The journey is as much inward as it is outward."

"I felt a huge appreciation for the natural world and people who encompass the spirit of endurance."
