TO THE ENDS OF THE EARTH: EXPLORATION AND ENDURANCE
ON FILM
A digitally remastered version of Frank Hurley’s legendary South, which captured historic footage of Ernest Shackleton’s Endurance expedition, will be released as the centrepiece of a British Film Institute film season dedicated to epic quests and the pursuit of the unknown. It will have a new score by film composer Neil Brand and will also be on sale as part of a special three-disc Dual Format Edition release ‘South and the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration’ from 21 February. SHACKLETON'S LEGACY AND THE POWER OF EARLY ANTARCTIC PHOTOGRAPHY
The Royal Geographic Society will be bringing back its extraordinary exhibition on the photographic legacy of the Endurance Expedition, looking not just at Shackleton as an explore but as a communicator whose story would enthral generations. Frank Hurley’s fragile glass plate and celluloid negatives, stored securely at the Royal Geographical Society for more than 80 years, have been digitised so that they can be seen at the remarkable level of detail he captured during that epic journey.
