THE ITINERARY

Shackleton and Fairmont Hotels present a nine-day journey of mini-expeditions to experience the stunning landscapes and incredible wildlife of British Columbia.

Guided by environmental experts and professors who will explain the phenomena observed, the Challenge offers the opportunity to witness the environmental debate first-hand. We’ll visit an abandoned sawmill as eerie as a ghost town, climb over a landslide five kilometres long and observe the effects of a forest fire. To appreciate the areas of protected ancient woodland, we’ll trek through old-growth rainforests amid 100m-high trees up to two millennia old, we’ll boat past rafts of sea otters that have been reintroduced to the area and we’ll search for the bears being protected by local conservation efforts.

We’ll travel by seaplane, vehicle, kayak and foot; we’ll swim-trek down the coast and paddle through fjords. We’ll hike untrodden natural paths beneath towering peaks; traverse windswept beaches pounded by Pacific swells, littered with storm-tossed tree-trunks bleached by sun and sea. We’ll overnight in luxury hotels and First Nation-run lodges, and spend each evening in convivial company. We’ll come through informed, evolved and inspired.

Pacific to Peaks Challenge

We’ll venture out into the ocean for a chance to see humpback whales and sea otters, while the barks of basking Steller sea lions echo from rocky islands. Heading inland, grizzly and black bears forage on the banks of the inlets and fjords as bald eagles and ravens soar overhead.

AUTHENTIC EXPEDITIONS

Every Shackleton Challenge has a central mission designed to develop the physical, mental and emotional strength required to access our untapped performance potential. While all challenges will stretch us to a degree, none will defeat us. We come through as a team.

SHACKLETON SPIRIT

Shackleton Challenges embody the enlightened leadership so central to the Boss’s own ethos, with empathy and encouragement at the centre. Our committed guides come with invaluable experience in tackling multi-day expeditions and a deep well of environmental wisdom and lively anecdotes. The contrast between daytime achievement and team-wide conviviality in the evenings is a distinctive feature of Shackleton Challenges that marks us out as different in kind.

LIFELONG RETURNS

The trials overcome will evolve into resources that you’ll draw on for the rest of your life, applicable to all kinds of situations where you’ll need to take the lead.

Memories made will abide. Like most of our Challenges alumni, you’ll probably stay in touch with the rest of the team.

The British Columbia Challenge requires a reasonable level of fitness, along with the stamina for successive days using our muscles for hiking, swimming or kayaking. The terrain is not especially technical nor the distances too daunting, but they can still catch out those unaccustomed to regular exercise.

Our industry-leading Foundations programme details exactly how we recommend all team members make ready to play their part in helping everyone come through.
