THE BRIEFING

Like the frozen south that called to Shackleton, the Arabian desert contains incomparable wonder, boundless variety and a host of practical challenges. When we adapt to meet them, we discover that determined humans - well prepared, expertly guided - are a match for most of what our planet has in its locker.

Our packed seven-day programme takes in hugely varied landscapes, from arid dunes to water-filled wadis and stunning mountainous canyons. We’ll sleep under a canopy of infinite stars, in a Bedouin camp and in heart-stopping luxury hotels. We’ll conquer distance by the most ancient and modern of means; hiking, swim-trekking, camels and 4x4 dune buggies. We’ll acquire and test life-saving skills and experience life-enhancing exhilaration, all book-ended by the spectacular hospitality that’s central to the culture. Each extreme is precisely designed to augment the other.

The Arabian desert is home to two of the world’s most extraordinary hotels, whose very existence is a testament to the power of the will. We’ll stay in both, as well as in a Bedouin camp under a canopy of infinite stars, and a guest house amid the dunes. We’ll experience tantalising food, unforgettable sunsets and sudden, extravagant dawns that stay with us forever.

We’ll convey ourselves across the rolling sands at the wheel of a modern ATV and atop a camel. We’ll abseil into canyons, swim-trek through spectacular wadis, climb and hike the stunning jebels of Oman, on foot and using via ferrata. You’ll want to take more pictures than you’re able to. There’s a lot of ground to cover.

We’ll learn to navigate by day and night; to recognise the plants that will keep us alive, and create a solar still to purify water; to avoid the region’s venomous inhabitants, and what to do in the event of an encounter. We’ll learn to manage daytime heat and acquire desert driving skills, and put it all to the test in the wild.
