Kungsleden Ski Challenge

Situated just above the Arctic Circle, the Kungsleden—or King's Trail—is a route of legendary status. Opened in the 1920s with the ambitious vision of threading through the most spectacular areas of Sweden, it was rightfully envisioned from its inception as the king of all trails. The route traverses the pristine, mountainous landscape of Laponia—Europe's last great wilderness and the ancient grazing grounds of the indigenous Sámi reindeer herders. Deep in this remote, frozen landscape, you will find yourself at times 60km from the nearest road, utterly immersed in the profound silence and raw beauty of the Arctic.

Traverse huge valleys with big mountain vistas, as you ski down the spine of the Scandinavian mountains seeing some of the most stunning scenery the Arctic has to offer. The route will take you across frozen rivers and lakes, through pretty tree-lined trails, and up over the Tjäktja Pass, the highest point of the trail.

Experience a Night Sleeping in a Snow Hole and Ice Fishing

Test your polar mettle, experiencing firsthand the traditional winter refuge method used by Sámi herders to survive sudden blizzards. Spend the afternoon out on a frozen lake trying ice fishing. As evening falls, you will enjoy dinner by the lake and drinks around a fire in an igloo, before bedding down for an unforgettable overnight stay in a snow hole.

En route the expedition pauses for a profound cultural immersion. We will visit a traditional Sámi village to learn about their ancient way of life, their deep connection to their reindeer, and the modern difficulties they face. To cap off the experience, you will have the privilege of sharing a traditional dinner with them inside their lavvu tent.

Step inside a fleeting masterpiece carved entirely from the Arctic winter. You will visit the iconic Ice Hotel to take in its intricately crafted ice sculptures. Raise a glass and enjoy drinks in the world-famous Ice Bar, surrounded by crystalline architecture that exists only for a few short months before melting back into the river.
