WHY I TAKE IT

LEVISON WOOD

Writer, photographer, explorer and so on to a maximum of 15 words.

"I love the X it always keeps me dry when exploring the amazon, it packs down to a 10th of its size and is just phenomenal."

DESCRIPTION

Palmer is built from a 4-way stretch double weave fabric — 88% nylon, 12% spandex — engineered for the full range of movement a day on the hill demands: high steps over stiles, long strides on approach, a crouch to fix a bootlace. The fabric carries a PFC-free C0 DWR finish and a 50+ UPF rating, blocking 100% of UVA and UVB rays without relying on weight or bulk to do it.

A crotch gusset and elasticated back waist extend the stretch through the trouser's structure, not just the fabric. Concealed zipped mesh leg vents give you a way to dump heat on a climb without stopping to strip a layer, and ankle scuff guards take the wear that a trouser hem takes first — from rock, from bike pedals, from a dog lead wrapped twice round a boot.

Five external pockets, an inner mesh pocket and a concealed valuables loop within the thigh pocket carry what a day out requires: map, phone, keys, permit. A Fidlock magnetic buckle and a webbing adjustable belt work the waist; a snap and zip fly and adjustable cord hems handle the rest. A concealed boot hook keeps the hem secure over rough ground.

Worn with a base layer, Palmer performs to −20°C. Without one, it holds its own from +20°C to +30°C — a single trouser built to move with the temperature, not just the terrain. Where most technical hiking trousers announce themselves, Palmer is cut to work equally well from trailhead to town.

A garment’s warmth depends on individual tolerance, layering, and conditions like wind or humidity, allowing flexibility beyond its listed temperature range.

Breathability measurement refers to a fabric's ability to allow moisture vapor to pass through, indicating how comfortable it will be during wear. The RET (Resistance to Evaporative Heat Transfer) value is commonly used; lower RET values (0-6) indicate very high breathability, while higher values (above 20) mean poor breathability.

The second way that breathability can be measured is moisture vapour transmission rate (MVTR), given in milligrams per hour (mg/h), showing how much moisture can pass through in a set time frame. Higher MVTR values indicate better breathability, ensuring comfort by reducing moisture buildup.
