DESIGN, PERFORMANCE & CONSTRUCTION ARE EXPEDITION- GRADE

Shackleton develops and builds outerwear to a performance level, not to a price point.

Our London-based product and expeditions teams work together to determine a use case, environment, temperature range and specific parameters such as waterproofing, breathability and weight. Each prototype undergoes a rigorous testing program on a Shackleton Challenge in an appropriate location, mostly in Norway and Antarctica.

Evolutions across multiple prototypes (often up to 6 iterations) ensure that positives are accentuated and weaknesses eliminated. Product performance on our expeditions is monitored and evolved each year to ensure that your chosen jacket can be relied upon absolutely. Products fit for Antarctica are fit for anywhere.

THE BEST MATERIALS, THE BEST PEOPLE

Fabric, hardware and construction standards are the key determinants of product quality. There are choices to be made at every level and our policy is to choose the best, using highest grade branded components for trims and hardware.

The choice of fabric is the most critical element and we work with the best mills in the world, often working in collaboration to develop new products with the optimal combination of performance, endurance and aesthetic.

All fabrics are subject to third party laboratory validation for tear strength, abrasion and all performance claims. We pay particular attention to comfort and use soft and natural materials next to skin wherever possible. Manufacturing is via the best reputed factories in Europe to Asia, where we insist on the highest standards and processes for zero/low waste pattern making, seam sealing and stitch count.

AN ENDURING APPROACH TO SUSTAINABILITY

Our approach is to develop products that will last far longer than standard jackets, giving higher value and reducing environmental impact.

We maximise the use of recycled fabrics wherever possible: currently 68% of all Shackleton outerwear fabric is recycled and approximately 65% of all products are made in the UK and Europe. We comply with all standards set by RDS, RWS, GRS and GOTS. See ‘impact and standards’ section on our site.

We subscribe to WRAP audits (Worldwide Responsible Accredited Production) which ensure that Shackleton products are made in lawful, humane and ethical conditions.
