Svalbard Dog Sledding Challenge

Svalbard, derived from the Old Norse for "the land with the cold shores," lives up to its name. Situated a mere 800 miles from the North Pole at 78 degrees, it lies further north than any point in mainland Russia, Canada and Alaska. This expedition offers the opportunity to master both historical and modern techniques of Arctic travel, utilising traditional dog sleds and contemporary snowmobiles to traverse Svalbard's breathtaking landscapes.

Svalbard Dog Sledding Challenge

The vastness of the wide-open valleys, framed by ribbons of towering mountains. The frozen expanses of sea ice and mighty glaciers. The captivating wildlife: the resilient Svalbard reindeer, the ghostly Arctic fox, and if fortune is favourable, the majestic polar bear.

Experience the Arctic's raw, untamed beauty.

Svalbard Dog Sledding Challenge

Learn the art of commanding a team of sled dogs.

Under the vast, silent expanse of the Svalbard sky, you'll discover the unique connection between musher and dog, mastering the subtle cues and commands. The only sounds to break the profound stillness are the rhythmic padding of paws on the crisp snow and the occasional echoing barks as you pass through the valleys on this two-day component of the expedition.

Svalbard Dog Sledding Challenge

This part of the expedition is designed to elevate your snowmobiling skills, progressing from beginner to advanced. Crossing miles of this Arctic terrain, the sheer scale is evident – one of the world’s largest wildernesses, the size of Holland and Belgium combined, yet home to a mere 2,500 people.

Embark on an epic 150-mile snowmobile journey through the breathtaking Nordenskjøld Land.

Svalbard Dog Sledding Challenge

Spend a night in a lodge on the remote far west of Svalbard. Dine on local reindeer or fresh ptarmigan while looking out over the sea ice and fog of the Greenland Sea. Here, the sea temperature stays below 0c in February. To navigators of old, this would really have felt like the ends of the earth.

Overnight at the edge of the earth

“As night fell over the tundra and the dogs settled down at the perimeter of our camp, the sky began to fill with colour, and we were treated to a breathtaking display of the northern lights.”
