Rothera Hooded Down Jacket
Caring for your down
European goose down is among the longest-lasting insulation there is. Keep it dry, store it lofted and wash it rarely, and it will keep performing for years.
In order to maximise your jacket’s longevity and performance, here is our comprehensive guide on how to care for you down jacket in the field, how to store & travel with it and how to properly wash & dry your jacket when necessary.
In The Field
• Keep it dry. Saturated down gives almost no warmth and is very hard to dry outdoors.
• Avoid heavy rain unless you’re wearing a waterproof-breathable shell over it.
• Don’t wear it over a soaked fleece or softshell. If you must, add a hardshell or windshell between them.
• On long cold trips, sweat can freeze in the down and reduce loft. On a clear, cold break, dry it in the sun over a pulk, tent or branch, secured so it can’t blow away.
• Down can drift within the baffles and leave cold spots at the lower back and elbows. Shake or work it back into place.
• Keep greasy food and fuels such as camp fuel, petrol and diesel away from the jacket. They stain and can damage a waterproof membrane.
Storage and Travel
• Hang it to dry fully, inside out if you like. Stored damp, it can develop mildew that is almost impossible to remove.
• Store it lofted, not compressed. Use a wood or plastic hanger with a rod at least 1 cm thick, never thin wire.
• Or keep it loosely fluffed in a large, breathable storage sack.
• For travel, stuff it one-handed into a properly sized stuff sack rather than rolling it. Avoid compression sacks with external straps. Empty the pockets of anything bulky or sharp first.
• Stuff sacks are for transit only. Don’t leave it packed for more than a week or two.
• Store the hood brim upside down so it keeps its shape.
• If a cluster pokes through, push it back in from the other side. Never pull it out. An occasional lost cluster won’t affect warmth.
• Down can drift within the baffles and leave cold spots at the lower back and elbows. Shake or work it back into place.
• Keep greasy food and fuels such as camp fuel, petrol and diesel away from the jacket. They stain and can damage a waterproof membrane.
