CHALLENGE OVERVIEW

The only permanent ice sheet on the planet outside Antarctica, the Greenland ice sheet is known as ‘Antarctica’s little sister’. It’s the perfect environment in which to test and hone advanced polar skills.

Working as a team, we’ll develop both resilience and competence in the elements required for a successful mission into one of the world’s most extreme environments. We’ll return to kayak amongst icebergs, sail through fjords, engage with indigenous communities and hike through mountainous valleys.

Greenland Ice Sheet Challenge

Once accessible only to its few thousand Inuit inhabitants and a handful of early explorers, Greenland is now opening itself to inquisitive travellers. Its recent time in the front pages has seen a surge in interest, but tourism is still in its infancy – and the east especially retains an otherworldly, almost alien feel.

The East coast hosts some of the world’s most majestic scenery. Towering peaks, glaciers, fjords and icebergs dominate. With conditions on our side, flying in with good visibility provides a visceral thrill. The view below turns from shifting sea ice (evoking that which trapped Endurance) to formidable icebergs and the most jagged glaciers encountered anywhere, the ice sheet stretching for a thousand miles beyond. Connected to no road network, it’s one of the least visited places on Earth. It’s truly wild, and a true test of character.

INVIGORATING EXPERIENCES, PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

Greenland Ice Sheet Challenge

TAKE POLAR SKILLS TO THE NEXT LEVEL

The Ice Sheet Challenge is designed to push your limits in an environment as close to the Antarctic as possible. From weathering the savage piteraq wind (literally “that which means you harm”) to advanced navigation, the expedition will elevate your skillset and prepare you for the world’s most challenging polar adventures.

We’ll ski up to 15km a day – the ice sheet is predominantly flat, our pulks sliding easily - and sleep in tents in temperatures as low as -20 degrees outside. We’ll all learn how to set the nightly trip wire to protect the camp from polar bears. There’s not much to draw them this far inland as we’ll have helicoptered past the crevasse-ridden coastal edges, but it pays to be prepared.

Greenland Ice Sheet Challenge

After a helicopter back from our last camp on the ice sheet, we’ll base ourselves in Tasiilaq, a fascinating coastal settlement of 3,000 souls whose language is unique to the area. We’ll head out to kayak through awe-inspiring fjords, where towering icebergs rise like frozen giants. Their groans seem to echo across the water as the ancient ice cracks and moves.

KAYAK THROUGH ICEBERGS

Greenland Ice Sheet Challenge

We’ll immerse ourselves in the beauty of the pristine Arctic wilderness, reaching areas only accessible on foot. We’ll break trail in total solitude, traversing valleys, rivers, shale and crag, feeling dwarfed by towering glaciers and peaks.

AUTHENTIC EXPEDITIONS

Every Shackleton Challenge has a central mission designed to develop the physical, mental and emotional strength required to access our untapped performance potential. While all challenges will stretch us to a degree, none will defeat us. We come through as a team.

SHACKLETON SPIRIT

Shackleton Challenges embody the enlightened leadership so central to the Boss’s own ethos, with empathy and encouragement at the centre. Our committed guides come with invaluable experience in tackling multi-day expeditions and a deep well of environmental wisdom and lively anecdotes. The contrast between daytime achievement and team-wide conviviality in the evenings is a distinctive feature of Shackleton Challenges that marks us out as different in kind.

LIFELONG RETURNS

The trials overcome will evolve into resources that you’ll draw on for the rest of your life, applicable to all kinds of situations where you’ll need to take the lead.

Memories made will abide. Like most of our Challenges alumni, you’ll probably stay in touch with the rest of the team.

This level two Challenge requires a robust level of fitness, some solid experience on skis and ideally some familiarity with a polar environment. Our industry-leading Foundations programme details exactly how we recommend all team members make ready to play their part in helping everyone come through.

CULTURAL IMMERSION

We’ll hike to our lunch in a remote Inuit home. We’ll spot more whales than many a dedicated expedition manages to see. We’ll absorb the eerie, ghost-town feel of a WW2 base, vehicles abandoned where they stood, and hear the history of local hunting from the only reliable source - local hunters.. You will remember this forever.
