The Art of Layering
Expedition-proven layering techniques tested in the extremes. Build your perfect system from base layer to shell jacket.
Explore Base Layers

Base Layer: Moisture Management
Base layers worn next to skin wick perspiration away, keeping you dry and regulating body temperature in all conditions.
Mid Layer: Thermal Insulation
Down jackets and active insulation trap warm air, providing essential insulation that adapts to your activity level.

Shell Layer: Outer Protection
Technical outerwear shields against wind, rain, and snow whilst allowing moisture vapour to escape from within.
Modular Versatility
Add or remove layers to adapt changing conditions and activity intensity, maintaining comfort in Antarctic to desert conditions

The foundation of any good layering system is a technical base layer made from a material that can wick moisture away from the skin to keep you dry and to stop you from overheating or becoming chilled.
Natural fibres with these properties, such as Merino – which is also lightweight, odour-resistant and fast-drying – are often combined with technical fibres such as Tencel™ within base layers to boost garment performance and increase durability.
"I take the Salient Hooded T-shirt because it's the kind of base layer I can rely on anywhere - from alpine starts to desert treks. The merino-Tencel™ blend gives me comfort, stretch, and climate control, while its UV-blocking ability is unmatched. It’s a high-performance piece that works just as hard as I do."

Shop Active Layers

Choosing the right midlayer for the season and your activity is crucial to any layering system because this insulating, breathable and packable layer provides the engine of adaptability for your whole set up.
In the cold, insulated down midlayers faced with breathable fabrics can be layered under protective outer shells. Lightweight down gilets and jackets made from insulating, breathable fibres boost moisture-management and keep your core warm. During high-output activities, these can be stowed in your pack or replaced with even lighter options.
"The Ross Down Gilet is a core layer I rely on when flexibility matters. Its elasticated armholes and hem ensure a snug fit without restricting movement, and the internal zipped pocket gives me confidence my essentials are secure when I’m on the go."
Jordan Wylie - British adventurer and author

The most important component of your layering system is the outer layer, which will provide the waterproofing, windproofing and even additional heat to survive the most extreme conditions.
Extreme weather can strike in any season, which makes packable waterproof hardshells, like the Markham, high-performance heroes and specialist shells, like the Fortuna Ski Suit essential for specific activities, like ski touring.
"I take the Markham Hardshell because it’s an ultra-lightweight shield against the elements. Fully seam-sealed and built with Cohaesive cord locks at the hood, it gives me fast and precise adjustability when conditions shift. It’s compact enough to pack but tough enough to trust."

Flexible Jacket for Photography
I’m an active photographer and I’ve been looking for a jacket that would be water proof and flexibility. This Markham Hardshell is perfect and not to mention the fit.

Cross Country Skiing Essential
This is the second Nelson Merino Base Layer I have purchased. The fit is excellent. The fabric stays close to the body due to the garment and fabric design but you don't feel like you are wearing anything.

Our garments are designed with layering in mind. Base layers should fit snugly against the skin for optimal moisture wicking. Mid layers like the Rothera have articulated sleeves to accommodate base layers beneath. If you plan to wear a thick mid layer under your shell, consider sizing up one size on the outer layer.
With all three layers combined, the system is proven to maintain body warmth in temperatures as low as -12°C. By adding or removing layers, you can adapt from mild conditions around 10°C down to extreme cold. The modular approach means you're prepared for rapidly changing mountain weather.
Machine wash on a wool cycle at 30°C with a gentle detergent. Avoid fabric softeners as they coat the fibres and reduce moisture-wicking performance. Lay flat to dry away from direct heat. Merino's natural antimicrobial properties mean you can wear it multiple times between washes.
Yes, the Rothera, Ronne, and Ross are designed as versatile pieces that perform excellently as standalone outerwear in dry conditions. They feature windproof shells and water-resistant treatments. In wet or extreme conditions, pair them with a shell layer for complete protection.
We recommend starting with the Nelson Merino Base Layer, adding the Rothera or Ronne Down Jacket as your mid layer, and completing with the Markham Shell Jacket.
